When and where would be the best place to buy this from?
I've looked on ebay but wondered if a garden centre might be cheaper

Laurel is very hardy ( try a good garden centre)
It is very easy to propagate laurel from a cutting taken from the tip of a branch. I grew eight new plants this year, to fill some gaps. Much cheaper than buying as established plants.
I second that!
Garden centre every time, at least you can see what you're getting.

Its usually the Cherry Laurel thats recommended for hedging, rather than Bay Laurel (true laurel) which is sometimes confusing.
