I have a clematis that is a single narrow bare stem of 8 feet before it branches into leaf and flower. Is there a way I can make it sprout more from the lower stem. I feel that if I cut it off at the woody section it won't regrow.

How can I increase the depth of soil? at the moment they are literally straight out of the ground and only about 5" high, thought it was bindweed at first

Just sieve some soil with your hand up an inch around the stems, above the division.
Have you never seen the new pot-ups in nurseries .. they all seem to pot them on deeply.
