Replacement Door. Back

We have an Everest fitted door which has been installed for over twelve years. It is now out of warranty. Over the last couple of years , this south facing door has become slightly warped and, as a consequence, this heavy rain we've been having is finding its way under the door and into the porch.

My question is, will it be possible to have just the door replaced or will the frame and adjoining window have to be replaced also?

How on earth can anyone answer that? Get a couple of companies out to give you a free estimate. Try local companies, I've just had all the windows replaced in our house and our local company was over £1200 cheaper than the cheapest National one.

If the doorway's a standard size then a replacement door might be a possibility.

Possibly standard, Tilly, but uPVC doors are often custom made to fit the opening.

It's impossible to say from here.

There are several adjustments that can be made to them. It may be all that you need.

Get yourself a decent straight edge ( spirit level or similar) and go around the frame and you will see if it's warped. If all seems ok then perhaps just a new door might suffice. Good luck.

Which material(s) are the door and frame made of ? It is possible that the hardware (hinges, lock arrangement) make a difference. While they may not preclude replacement of just the door, it may be simpler and cheaper, and very possibly more satisfactory, in the end to replace the set with a new set.

Thanks, Mr B. It has just occurred to me that the locking mechanism within the frame and the door might be tailor made too.

Karl, the door and the frame are UPVC, with integrated, metal, five point locking system.

If rain is coming in Tilly, it may well be too warped for adjustment to be enough.

What I would do, is to explore the possibility of loosening the frame and sort of bending it to fit the door.

Again, it may well be too far gone. Look for a local builder or carpenter who can take a look and advise.

Perhaps the problem is being made worse by a damaged or worn weather-strip at the bottom of the door...a new strip could do the job (and be a whole lot cheaper!).

Ginge, the door has a cill at the bottom which directs the rain out over the threshold. Over time, with summer sun, this cill is two centimetres higher on one side than the other. This is where the water's coming in. It comes into the channel at the bottom of the door frame and eventually spills over onto the floor. You can see that the door has warped to the left hand side. Sometimes, in the summer, we have trouble closing it.

two centimetres? Good grief, you could get ocelots coming in through there. That's a lot of warping - The Builder will know best, but it sounds like a big job.

I'm not qualified to answer this, but I like the canopy solution Tilly - a case of thinking outside the box :-)

The wind might have other ideas mind you, my porch gets drenched when the wind is in the wrong direction.

You probably need to put a straight edge against it and see exactly what has warped and what's still straight.

well I'm glad the builder agrees with me that its impossible to say from here what to do and the best thing would be to get a local tradesman to look at it. lol! He got best answer -I got called rude ! typical AB,

I was wondering about that also, APG. The Builder, and others, agreed with your initial opinion.
