Is it really true that it keeps them horrible slimy slugs away?

I also thought of adding sand to the base of the Hoster plants!

One ptoblem I found with the adhesive copper tape - it's VERY easy to cut your fingers when applying it - BEWARE!!

dont know about cutting your fingers! it really got my knickers in a twist when keep trying to not cock it up --very very sticky stuff --beware lol
cant wait to see a slug now, will follow it and see where he goes ha ha
Another way to keep slugs/snails out of your potted Hosta's is to rub a little Vaseline or Vick around the rim of the pot.
Not as permanent as copper bands but handy for those pots with a rim that would be spoilt by the look of a band.
Another way is biological control like this :-

thank you for interesting link slackalice, and may all our hostas live happily ever after.
I have used broken egg shells before, which has appeared to work. Apparently they don't like travelling across the sharp bits.
However, as previously stated, I've put a small amount of beer into a small sunken pot. At least they die happy. Cleaning them out is another matter, though, as the smell is truly appalling.
as hostas like the wet i stand all my pots in large saucers of water the slugs dont seem to be able to cross the water barrier

our hosters are always sitting in water, but were off for 2 weeks on thurs for hols.
I think a layer of sand on top of the soil may be another good idea?
