Pruning Shrubs
799 Answers
Have any of you lovely gardeners hard pruned, into old thick wood, any of the following shrubs and had them live to see another year?!! I read all the books but there's so much conflicting advice when it comes to renovation pruning.
Olearia haastii (Daisy bush)
Lonicera fragrantissima (winter honeysuckle - think this one will be ok)
Cotinus (smoke Bush).

Hope you all had a comfortable night in my shed, at least the roof stayed on. I don't feel as though I've been to bed really, I'm just as tired & achey as I was last night, tut.
Ouch jno, sorry you've a pain in the derriere. Would you like me to put a post in B&S on your behalf? ;o) Hope you feel more comfortable for the journey home.
Now come on neti, I'm afraid you're deluded, they're never going to let you join them you know...

Ha, ha. Killing myself laughing at Woofy's remark about poor jno's candles. The mind boggles. Hope the hot wax sorts you out jno. Oh dear.
Lovely garden photos from everybody yesterday. Neti, I would love to have a go at your land. I will come over for a few months and all you will have to do is pay my air fare, provide board and lodging and take me out to lovely cafes and restaurants!!
He he.
My day yesterday was excellent. Glorious sunshine for a starter. We drove into Norwich where my friend had an appointment at 11.00am. I wandered off to Debenhams and bought that Julien Mcdonald top which I couldn't get online. Searched for some cream trousers in vain. Then met up with friend and we troddled off to get my gold valued (do you remember my thread on AB about my bits of gold) Anyway, after getting gold valued and some dosh, toddled off to another jeweller who deals with antique jewellery and exchanged three rings which actually needed new settings and didn't fit me anyway. Ended up at the end of the day with £550.00 and a lovely £250 ring which I shall treat as a present from Mum and Dad and I know they would be pleased.
Lunch then in Bella Italia (half price as had my Taste Card with me)!! They did a bit of browsing round John Lewis's and M&S. Left the city at 3.30 and treated ourselves to tea and cakes at a very large garden centre half way back to Fakenham. Sat outside in the sunshine, then just as we were leaving the black clouds threatened and the wind got up.
By the time we arrived home the heavens had opened.
A lovely, satisfying day.
Now got to catch up with things at home. My new cooker is arriving today - I know not at what time.

Ha ha lottie that was on my android phone and I couldn't see what I was typing, you're a nerd if you think you can sort out my rocky scrubby land!! :-)
I have been well and truly pruned, although it's still very modern (thank heavens), but it's all fly away at the mo and driving me mad. I hate sitting there when they are sculping my hair (not that I can be anywhere else!) as I look truly awful, all lumps, bumps and warts!!! with a rather splendid spare tyre!

Oh and lottie, the house is far enough away from the land, we'd be safe, but you in your little tent accomdation, well that's a different matter!

Jno ..I hope you've had tests to rule out anything untoward in that area .
Mr.S had them for years .He reckoned he got them from sitting about in the cold in the Lüneburger Heide when he was in the army which is total nonsense.
Lots of bleeding and an op for a fissure etc and to cauterize them but back they came.
Do keep an eye on them please .Not that have eyes in the back of your head but you know what I mean :)
Sounds like a good day Lofty .I have gold stuff sat here that I'd like to get rid of .Lots of rings that I can't get over my knuckles .Thing is most of it 585 German stuff which I think is 14 carat and one or two 22 carat bits so I doubt it would be worth much .
Had my hair cut .God I've gone grey .I need it coloured but I've got this eczema in my scalp .
It's turned really chilly here .Cold east wind. Lovely and sunny though .

Hi Shaney. You would be surprised at just how much the gold will be worth. I was. There wasn't a lot of it. A couple of tiny ladies watches, one without a bracelet, a few rings and a watch fob chain which was 22ct. The fob chain brought in over £400. Actually I got over £550 it was nearer £570 for the lot. The valuer wouldn't take the three victorian rings with stones because he said he could only give me the gold value because the settings were worn out and they would cost a lot to right. He directed me to the shop opposite John Lewis which deals in old jewellery and they confirmed that the rings were in poor condition but offered me a good deal if I bought a ring I wanted for myself. So I got a ring for £250.00, for which I paid £35.00.
The first chap confirmed that MinLs wedding ring was german and 14c but I kept it. So I have both mothers wedding rings as keepsakes which I am happy about.
Shaney, so much grey appeared on my head after our horrendous year of 2009. It proves how stress can hasten the appearance of grey hairs.
Now about meeting up.................................. (I am not going to harrass you, but I miss you!)
My goodness it is so cold today. I have ordered heating oil to arrive tomorrow, especially now t hat I can't use the woodburner because of the jackdaw's nest!!
