Why are deckchairs stripey?

They are not all stripey. In the days when you could hire deckchairs on our local beaches at 6d a pop, they were a dull municipal green.

Its so that you could wear your 'Beachboys' style shirts, with those vertical stripes and just blend in, down at the beach.
