Moss In The Lawn

I`ve just been to mow the lawn and I notice that the little bit of moss which was down one end and came about from next door`s shrubs has now spread over the whole lawn. There is hardly any grass to mow. I was just talking to my neighbour who said her front lawn has gone the same way. The front lawns face North so I can understand that but I have no moss on mine. The back is very hot and sunny and I`m surprised that after such a hot summer, the moss has taken over. Has anyone else noticed the same?

I don't have a lawn but I have moss all over and in between the patio paving stones. Quite surprising after such a dry summer.
ive noticed moss by the adjoining fence about a foot wide it is the only part of the garden that is in the shade for most of the day ,i dug the piece up and extended the border .
Moss grows when the soil becomes sour and compacted. It can get its moisture from the air so the current humid weather has suited it well (you should see my roof!)

Thanks for the replies. That could explain it, Woofgang. I have moss on the roof too but the magpies take care of it and I end up picking all the bits up from the patio after thay have paid a visit.
The moss on my roof and in my gutters has mostly now all gone after all the high winds and heavy rain recently. The seagulls help to remove it and then throw it into the garden.
Moss in lawns is usually an indication of poor drainage which is much more noticeable in the Autumn.
It can be controlled by scarifying and aerating the lawn.

chemical treatments are also available but I would sort out the drainage firstly.
