Household rubbish!

Where does it go? I know there are land fills etc but our town must have 20,000 houses. Even if you just have one bin per house per week thats nearly 100,000 bins a month and think how long its been going on? surely it cant just be being buried or we will end up like that episode of the simpsons where it starts popping up out of the ground!!!

As you say matt, into landfills. I drive a tipper and quite often go to landfills. They vary in size. The one at Brogborough near Bedford has been going for at least 20 years and is on the site of old clay pits for the brick building industry. I would guess it is about 1.5 mile square. Nearer to me, the one at Sidegate Lane nr Wellingborough has been going for  a similar time, but is now on its 3rd phase. I was there last week and I was on top of the heap looking down about 200 feet into the bottom of the next 'cell'. Each cell has a base area of about 300m x 300m. I can remember about 15 months ago when the pile I was tipping on was down at that level! It doesn't take long to fill them up.

I believe Sweden has a system of incinerating rubbish which not only gets rid of it but also supplies cheap central heating to apartment blocks.

Unfortunately we dont have anyone in our political system that has even 1% of the intelligence of the rest of Europeans so we will continue to fill valleys with our garbage until the Yorkshire dales are known as the Yorkshire flatlands.

The incineration idea is often shot down by nimbies. It's not to do with "Intelligence" as you put it kev it's to do with our own legal structure which means it takes forever to get things done. I suppose the other governments of Europe can ride rough shod over the people with impunity.

Surely not all borough councils have nice deep landfill areas to put their rubbish into? In my part of the world they use incinerators and recycle what they can of the collections (at present newspapers and cans are collected separately every second week).
