This morning the tap on the bathroom basin decided not to turn off.It has a lever action. I turned it off by the isolation valves on the pipes.
Can anyone tell me if it is something I could fix or should I get someone in?

My personal opinion is that the tap itself is unlikely to be repairable as such but it is not a major job to replace it or a part of it with the right tools - you are presumably a good judge of whether you can or not. Is it a mixer tap or are there separate hot and cold ones, one of which has failed ? This is an example of what can be done in the case of single source (non-mixer) taps, just make sure your lever has the matching number of splines.

Very easy to fit. You could take one out first to check length, but they seem to be universal.

Ignore above. Those are ordinary rotary valves. You need these.
You can dispose of the levers if you don't like them.

With respect Builder, it is apparently a mixer tap. Mexican, is it single lever, in which case Builder's (both) and my first are inappropriate ?

I know, Karl, but many mixers have separate Hot & Cold valves.

However, I have missed the fact that this may be a single lever that operates BOTH the hot & cold.

Seems more likely, actually..............

Mexican same difference, just measure between centres of hot and cold feeds, think they are standard, but not totally sure then take your pick. Take it you have flexible connectors supply to tap?

Thanks Tony. Yes I have flex couplings.I have decided to get a man in. For the sake of a£100 or so, I think it is worth it.

A plumber friend has said he will do it for£100, including new tap.
I think it is worth it, just for peace of mind.

That seems a reasonable price, lucky you have a friend to do it for you. You do hear some nightmare stories about some "tradesman".

With single lever taps, it's only worth renewing the cartridge (that would probably be the problem), if it's a particularly expensive item.
