Thanks for the nice quick answer, geev041. It was given to us by a cousin a few years ago and now we have a few pieces around the garden, as do a few neighbours. Lovely, bright flowers on a day like today.

Yep Hottentot fig, The leaves store lots of water and its often used as a fire prevention plant, around hotels etc, especially southern California.
