What am I doing wrong, please?
We have slugs in a brick outhouse where I store a few things like sacks of birdseed, and dog food, all well protected. However, after reading in previous postings about letting them die with a smile, I put down containers with lager. No luck whatsoever. Is this because we have true British slugs who prefer Real Ale, do you think?

I used to get tiny slugs coming in under my kitchen door during wet bouts of weather. All solved now - I simply shake salt across the back doorstep (stays there for a couple of days at a time before it blows away) and no slugs dare to cross. A cheap and easy solution and they don't die either as they don't come near. If the weather is wet, you'll find the salt will still do the job for a day and night before you have to replace it. Good Luck

Hi sixpence, Beer and Pellets tend to attract the little perishers and so does birdseed, I don't use either, however, I think you've got a bit of a problem with the area to defend.

For plants, I use Copper Tape, which I don't think is practcible in this situation, I hang my birdseed on the wall of my shed, but that doesn't in itself stop the mice, which can climb, so how about plastic containers, that should stop the lot, not sure about the Dogfood, unless its in tins,

Hope this is of some help.

Thanks Dollie and Lonnie (you sound like a Music Hall Act).
I've been a bit careless with the foodstuff in the past but about a month ago I made sure everything is in containers, but the little devils are still appearing., bringing their children and grandchildren. I shall just keep trying, as I think once this lot have gone they will lose interest. I 'll try some of your tips as well.
Just a thought, you say your keeping everything in containers, Copper tape then, just wrapit round the base, and it'll last for ages.

Copper tape it will be then, lonnie. I'll beat the little dears!!
I think the idea is to bury the container up to its neck then the slugs can get to it,also I think flat proper beer is the right stuff.Cheap stuff should suffice
To follow on fro keeprockin, as I said earlier, Beer does work, but its an attractant, (is there such a word), so you not only get the slugs in your garden, you get them coming in from quite a distance around.
