My daughter did the same and it all scrubbed out with a large bottle of nail varnish remover
If there is a pile, try cutting off as much as you can then use nail varnish remover. Be prepared to use lots of it and have a load of old cloths for mopping up. Don't rub to the edges, work inwards or you will spread it out and it will just be a paler, larger stain. If it is metallic, it will be easier than a solid colour and the paler the better. Good luck
Acetone(from good chemists) will dissolve it,but it is very inflammable,so good ventilation and no source of ignition - no smoking.naked flames or switching electrical appliances
If you do use acetone, or any other spirit-based nail varnish remover, try it on a piece of carpet you can't see first!
Many man-made fibres will dissolve in them, and dyes may run. Wool should be OK, though. Best to check first.
Think if it was soluble,it would have shown this with the original spillage, but good adice to proceed cautiously
