I'm making a small MDF shelf unit - can I fix together with nails ? (If so what sort ?) or do I have to use screws ?

Many Thanks

Screws are much more secure and will not loosen as much over time.

Also, if you drill pilot holes first it will be much easier and less likely to split

With nails, if you don't drill first, you run the risk of splitting the MDF if it isn't thick enough. If using screws you should probably drill first as too. I'd would use nails (panel pins or lost heads depending on thickness of MDF) and glue, or just screws, if not using glue.
