I believe creosote is now banned due to various safety and health issues, there are several substitutes on the market if you ask at B Q somebody should be able to tell you the alternatives
It has been illegal to sell creosote since 1st May, 2003.

Since 1st July, 2004, simply possessing creosote has been a criminal offence.

However, 'creosote substitute' is widely available, e.g:

According to Wikipedia, coal creosote has some negatives associated with it whereas wood creosote appears not to. Within the EU, all creosote is a regulated substance. with only licensed operators being allowed to handle and use it.
Further to other posters answers,
Creosote was banned as it was found to have very high Carcinogenic (Cancer Inducing) properties.
Creosote not available to general public since 2003, not banned. Still freely available to purchase for agricultural use etc.
