thanks for your replys been to see ,there is nothing on the menu to say he has a time scale so that the tv switches it self off .he says if he keeps his finger on the button a while it stays on .it has stayed on while i have been away to me it does seem like the on - off button has a fault but like i say am no tv enginner. if any help he never switches off on the tv button always on...

His Sleep Function could be switching his TV off.
Go into Menu and look for sleep function and deactivate that
My dad's TV has a snooze function to save power if he falls asleep. It periodically pops up and asks him to press a key on the remote (if he hasn't used any of the other controls in a preset period). If he doesn't respond, it turns itself off.

the reason i think its the on - off button is. it jumps from blue to red when i use the tv on -off button .if that makes sence
If he has a TV Handbook, look in the Index to see if it mentions Sleep Function and if it does check it out throuh TV Remote,
Blue is Standby and Red is Off
