I drink a lot of coffee. Would it be cheaper to boil just the amount I need each time, or boil a kettle full and store the surplus in a flask?

or an insulated cafitierre
bobbin - I don't know anything about on-demand boilers but I suspect they're fed from the rising main, not from a stored water-supply.
it was me, not bobbin. I just can't think of the damn name of them
Bhg481:
Physics was a subsidiary subject for my degree, so I did consider the errors that might creep into such an experiment. I actually worked the other way round though, starting with a hot kettle each time in order to maintain consistency (simply because I couldn't be bothered to wait for it to cool down).

I'm also aware that, to do the experiment with proper scientific rigour, I should have repeated each trial several time and then taken the mean of the figures I'd obtained. However, for the purposes of providing an answer here on AB, I viewed a single trial as acceptable.

BTW: I've just calculated the cost of boiling a single 'large mug' of water to be 0.86p based upon a typical electricity tariff.
Sorry bednobs - I did realise what you meant. They used to be made by Ascot in Salisbury, near Old Sarum castle, so were commonly known as "Ascots" but I think the firm disappeared years ago.
we are misunderstanding each other I think BHG, it's a type of boiler - the type where you don't have a tank and you turn on the tap and it heats what you need
it just came to me - combi!
Chris - you would have surprised me had you not taken the residual heat into account.
bednobs - OK, combi boilers are not what I was thinking of. I was actually going to say in my first reply that I didn't know anything about combi-boilers, but I couldn't think of the name either so I made no comment.
Admirable practices barry1010 and bhg481 !!

barry, if you are using an electric kettle, a folded hand towel etc can be wrapped round the kettle before boiling and removed ( if necessary ) before pouring and re-wrapped round the kettle again; this keeps the water in kettle hot longer and keeps the towel dry after drying your hands. I use this both to dry my dish drying towel and hand towel. ( be careful a certain electric kettles I had with a 'soft'/flexible plastic water indicator parallel (and under) with the pouring handle leaked eventually from the heat AND I kept the towel wrapped round it during boiling... if I had only wrapped towel around after boiling I think it may never have leaked )
You can buy insulated electric kettles (that's thermally insulated as well as electically insulated). I've only ever seen them at camping shows but they're not unattractive and I wonder why they're not more widely available.
I boil a week's supply of water on a Sunday, and keep it in the freezer until required.
Is this thread for real?
If you freeze it in mugs, it will be easier to use...
I want one of those now, Polly.

Thanks, buenchico, that's good to know :)

I cannot abide hot drinks made with re-boiled water, maybe because the water is very hard but it really affects the taste so your Breville is a no no for me, APG. Water kept hot in a flask is okay.
Coffee machines - I have tried many and none of them make the coffee hot enough so I will stick to my instant coffee.
It takes an Ice age for the hot water to come through to my bathroom, I'm sure it goes through neighbours central heating before I can get a shave.
Ummmm they are brilliant. I can make a hot drink in under 30 seconds.
Barry -the Breville just boils the amount of water it dispenses -it does not boil the whole lot like a kettle. You fill it with cold water and the cold water goes from the tank over heated coils into you cup.
