Bizarre as it might sound our Queen is actually the King. Hence Philip's just being the Duke hence Albert just being the 'Prince Consort'. Technically she is King Elizabeth the Second! Just like King Victoria the First. But countries have different ways of doing this eg Nederlands or Sweden or Norway nowadays according to revolution and constitution and tradition. There is no one 'spray on' system. Principality is derived from the Latin word 'princeps' which meant to the Romans 'big army boss man' we get 'prince' from it but not 'Prince and the Revolution' and raspberry beret. The Roman Emperors were 'Princeps'.

Latin word meaning "first in time or order; the first, foremost, chief, the most eminent, distinguished, or noble; the first man, first person". As a title, "princeps" originated in the Roman Republic wherein the leading member of the Senate was designated princeps senatus.
