my newphew had to stay behind at school for dention to 5pm trying to find out if this is with in the law please help !!!!

I'd be more concerned about what the unacceptable behaviour was and whether the child had learnt something of cause and effect from the 'dention'.
Somebody should go round and give the teacher who gave the child Dentions a clip around the ear. Who do they think they are?

The law makes it quite clear that the parents are responsible for arranging the child's home journey. The school is not responsible.

My school gives 1 hour after school detentions - sending a letter out giving at least 24 hours of notice. The present SoS wants to remove this rule and simply allow schools to phone or text on the day.

You should also be aware that a school can legally issue detention on a Saturday and parents are responsible for travel/attendance.
