How much notice is required if an employee is n longer needed for further service after 12 mothns? Can an organisation tell them on thier last day? Is that legal?

depends on the contract,
If it's a fixed term contract, then at the end of the term the company can choose not to renew.
As a guide, if you're paid weekly expect a week's notice, monthly a month's notice. That said, they can pay that week and ask you to leave.
Also, unfair dismissals cannot be claimed where 12 months employment hasn't been fully completed.
