theres a girl in my class whose predicted a*'s in every subjects and so far on all her tests and courseworks she's got a*s. but she only wants to be a primary school teacher.

don't you think that someone of that intelligence should aim higher in life?

i am predicted a s and a couple of bs and i want to be a marine biologist/oceanographer and my teachers say that theres nothing stopping me and that i could quite easily be one. so why has she got suchlow asperations for life?

i followed my 'potential' and im on 60k per year at 31 but if i could turn back time i would be a paramedic. its what you have passion in. you will realise this when your older...... when its too late lol

Hi nix, I must say for someone 16 years old you've stuck your ground on this thread. You'll go far.... no problem about that. This girl may change her mind by the time she's done her A' levels and feels she wants to venture further out into the world. Good luck in your exams.

But if thats what she wants to do with her life what's wrong with that?? I think being happy in your career choice is much more important than fulfilling your potential. I could probably do something 'better' than teaching but to me it seems like the greatest choice in the world and something not just that I want to do but something I have to do, I couldn't imagine doing anything else and maybe this girl feels the same way. If she does her exam results and however good they are will have no bearing on her decision to be a teacher.

So you think marine biology and oceanography are the same thing?

Oceanographers study the physical processes that control ocean circulation, and the role of the ocean in the climate system.

Marine biologists collect, analyse and count the small and mundane stuff, such as bacteria, plankton, fish larvae etc.
Marine biologists do NOT work with dolphins, whales etc - that work is done by zoologists.

Because they either have two degrees or they are being economical with the truth! Oceanography is an earth sciences subject and marine biology is a biology subject!

As I said, I did my degree in marine biology and initially worked for (what was then called) MAFF (Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Fish). In my spare time I was always inerested in shipwrecks and eventually I became a marine archaeologist. I still work part time in that field.

I'm sorry if I have come across as sounding harsh - I don't mean to, but it is annoying when people have misconceptions about something I know a lot about!

Maybe because she wants a job that she knows she will enjoy, is rewarding, and give something back. Because she has such high grades she can pick and choose, and that is what it is all about. She may well move on to become a head teacher and run her own school one day.
Its happiness that matters most and job satisfaction.How many people are sitting at work hating what they do? Somehow I don't think she will be one of them.
