Help please. Hi, a few days ago unknown to me a car was unloaded from a breakdown truck in front of my house. My neighbours say they didn't see who it belongs to or where it came from.I am a fairly tolerant and fair minded person so I will give it a day or two to see if anyone comes forward to remove it. It is taxed until November so legally it can stay on the road. My question is if it sits there for days or weeks and causing an inconvience to me is there anything I can do about it to get it moved? I know this is a very grey area but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I suspect that a lot of the failure of minds to meet on the previous page relates to some basic town/country differences.

It is absolutely true that a taxed/MOTd/insured car can be parked on the public highway, for any length of time, anywhere where there is no specific prohibition (disabled space,dropped kerb, yellow lines etc). No-one has any 'rights' to the road outside their house.

When I lived in a busy town street it was the law of the jungle - if you saw a space you took it - the concept of asking anyone if you could do so would be just alien to everyone's thought processes.

In my rural village there is no parking problem at all - plenty of spaces on the roads. So when, for instance, one of my neighbours temporarily had a son and his wife move back in (with an extra two cars) they had a quick word with the rest of us to work out the least intrusive places to park those cars (outside my house as it happened). Not a legal requirement, just a courtesy.

From my hazy memory of a single visit to gness's road (I was on the bike & so parking was less of an issue) most of the houses have extensive double-width dropped kerbs. It would be, I guess, virtually impossible to park a car in some parts of the road without obscuring at least some part of a dropped area - but without in any way actually 'blocking off' access to the property. In that situation I would always just check with the relevant householder that I wasn't impeding their access.

Politeness costs nothing - just because you 'know your rights' doesn't mean that you shouldn't show courtesy to others.

S-O-G - do you live next door to me, sounds like you do? The bloke next door (can't prove it, but I am sure it was him), sent us a pretend police notice saying we were parked illegally and that himself had to take his documents to the police station (the police have been here before about the parking but agree that we are being as considerate as we can).

but what if the person says no? what it everyone says no? because many many would say no...
shoudl you park many roads away from your house, just because you allowed someone else to make the choice for you?

and yes politeness costs nothing - but then i am not the one on here, angry at a stranger for daring to park by my house and threatening the police etc, and nor am i the one advocating stealing and dumping other peoples cars in other places.

so theres polite... and theres moaning irate theiving nimby...

e.g. Visiting friends.....stopping at the corner shop....park my car on the street.....no more..no less...no problem.
e.g. Doing an all day charity event in the packed backstreets of a nearby town...knock on the door...say my car will be there all day will it be a problem for anyone needing close access to their property. Never had to move always get a smile and as long as you like love.
As SD said....courtesy... and I would hate not to be like that. But I have been around long enough to know that there are a few miserable bu99ers who are less that courteous.
Steal a car? Never! Good Lord. I just arrange to have the car moved to the safety of a car park where it is not in danger of being knocked or scratched by a passing fire engine or the like....it's a good deed sweetie. ;-)

Try seeing if the vehicle is insured as suggested previously.
No-one has a legal right to park on the highway.
Having worked with a breakdown company it would be unusual to leave a vehicle anywhere without gettng a signature at the other end - first to acknowledge receipt and also to ensure that the breakdown company didn't do damage.

I think I've just entered the twilight zone...if you move someone else's car without asking it's a TWOC offence, not to mention an exceptionally dramatic overreaction to what is pretty much a non event. We are talking about cars parked on a street not in your lounge, try to get some perspective please.

in the OPs post the car was put there by a recovery truck - so probably cant be easily moved anyway.... but hey tow it to where is suits you eh?

If it was a breakdown truck left it there does that not suggest they left it at the wrong address and the owner may have reported it stolen? Perhaps the police/owner might appreciate being informed.
