If you decide not to co-operate with the police if they dare to harass you going about what you regard as your lawful business, do they have any legal power to demand your name and address? Also, can I demand to know their names or do they only need to provide their PC number?

They were,in my day, only obliged to provide their shoulder number and Police Station/Department to which they were attached. If a police officer may suspect an offence has been committed he would ask the suspect for their name/address and proof of those details. If refused or it is believed the details are false or cannot be verified then arrest can ensue....

Thanks for that retrocop.
No iyo is pc plod derogatory?
"what you regard as your lawful business"
I think they are entitled to take a view on that.
Not in my opinion. I have been called worse. Plod, filth, pig, rozzer, old bill, scuffer and some delightful Jamaican descriptions. We are actually not allowed to be offended by statute and our Police Instruction manual states that,'Idle and silly comments (against a police officer) should be ignored and disregarded'
I never could work out the difference,in those circumstances, what was the difference between ignored and disregarded. Hey Ho. Perhaps that is why a police officer now requires a uni degree to join.
As an aside. I did get really miffed and a tad annoyed when I was seconded to Greenham Common to protect a USAAF base that contained Cruise missiles. Hundreds of us filth had to 'stand to' and link arms to prevent morbidly obese, ugly, female tent dwellers try to cut through the base chain link perimeter wire.It was jolly good sport for these former 'up sticks and at em' hockey gals to rub their used sanitary towels in our faces knowing we could not break our link in the protective cordon. Charming people and endearing names they called us in those days.
Of course a copper today is lucky not to get machete'd or shot so I suppose I can't grumble.
signed Porky the Pig. :-)

Thanks everyone, especially Retrocop. So, I will decide when I need to wear a face mask or not. But if some jumped-up busybody p-o-lice-man should assume powers that are not even enacted in law & tries to ask me my name and address I will say, "Oi, expletive deleted, NO" - and refuse. So, he then arrests me (or she or some transgender pronoun these days I assume) - and I flat refuse to give any details at the station. Do they have to keep me locked in a cell indefinitely to wear me down? I think there are time-limits, but how will they charge me if they can't get my address or name? If they let me go, how can they reach me? I guess they can't, I guess they won't, I guess they're stuck. That's why I know the Force is out of luck, fool! (enough with the Coolio lyrics already).
So how do they fine or enforce a fine against someone who keeps schtum and will not give any personal details? What they gonna do? Follow me home? Like, yeah, they got the resources to do that! I guess they could follow me via CCTV all the way home, but by now I will be wearing a mask - and maybe even a burqa.
Things have changed so much. I used to watch Dixon of Dock Green with my Gran and Grandad. Our family loved the police. They could do no wrong. 'Bent copper' was an oxymoron. Now though I detest them. They fail to solve most crime. They waste time on pathetic trifling matters. Even when they do occasionally solve something - it's only because someone in a political position was the victim or knows someone who knows someone who really would like that particular crime solved. So, from respect an awe for those lovely, trustworthy, dependable police officers of my youth - now I see huge fat overweight louts - sometimes with tattoos. Whose side are they really on? Are they getting their pay supplemented by criminals? That would explain loads. So no, I will not co-operate, and no, I have never been in trouble or arrested or anything (unless parking tickets count?) - but I am seriously thinking about an apprenticeship as a criminal - if anyone has any criminal contacts with a vacancy -let me know (my preference is for bank robbery - not old-school but using that hacksaw or hacking method- or whatever these computer boffins call it - I do have computer skills - I know how to turn it on and off and to log into Answerbank). But I digress - just how what do police do with someone whose details they cannot find? Actually, maybe don't answer that - now I know why Black Mariahs all have tinted windows.
