The timing of your post (0245 GMT) suggests that you might not be in the UK, where this website is based. (The USA, perhaps?). If so, you should note that our laws will be very different to those in your country, so it's unlikely that anyone here can help you. (Posting on a US site, such as Quora, might be better).

However if you're in the UK, you don't hold a lien over the property. If a court held that you're intentionally seeking to permanently deprive the other party of her property, you could be convicted of theft, as well as facing civil action.
Just give it back to her
If you have it then surely it would be less grief to just give it to her.
If you don’t have it did you attempt to get it to her, if so just tell her that
Make a storage charge.
Eek ! Chris is a bit hard-line.
She has nt abandoned it - she wants it back !
You have to give it back. It is hers. Arrange a time.
signed Judge Jude.

Liens and fings tho technical are correct - but the bottom line is always, you have to give it back.

Frostie - you are in meltdown. Return the stuff and move on
Make a storage charge. nope
no agreement.
arrange a time and allow her in to collectt

Do NOT dump it on the porch/patio and say triumphantly " I have given it back and she wasnt there!"

just do it
a propos of absolutely nothing
a tenant tried that - where's me stuff etc
and then she triumphantly said - my laptop has gone!

I said - you gave the key to a friend didnt you? she was seen going in a week or so ago. So I have had no control over your stuff at all

and she sulkily admitted that was so

Kathryn ( 5 spellings of Kath, I wonder why?) have you read this?
Well, this question resinates with me somewhat, as I went through something similar.

Did she attempt to get her stuff at all over the last 7 months?
Did you offer for her to collect her stuff at all over the last 7 months?
Do you still have her stuff?

When my wife walked out on me (she left whilst I was at work, abandoned the house (about 70% of her stuff and joint items)) I went into full meltdown and couldn't cope. My family moved me and everything out of the house. Everything went into a shipping container. She was furious that I had taken everything - apparently the washing machine was a present from her nan (who had passed away). I gave her the opportunity (just once, although I never set a time limit) to gather her things and even said that I'd make sure that I was not present. I even said it would be ok for a family member to collect her stuff.

I believe the questions I've asked are important, as they could very well help things go in your favour, depending on the answers of course.
