Dear all

A colleague at work has just told me that she is pregnant, just found out today! She's precisely 1 month into ( I believe ) a 3 month contract, which most likely would be renewed and made into full-time. Thing is, she's just confided in me and said that now she is really worried that if she tells her manager they will chuck her. Is this right? Are they allowed to do that? Are their any good websites I could suggest she check, just to find some information? We work for a large multi-national, just I cannot advise her because I don't know the employment law on this. Any help as ever greatly appreciated. Thanks

Your friend will be automatically be unfairly dismissed if she loses her job purely because she is pregnant. Some employers will try and get round this to escape liability by saying it was on the grounds of capability or some other reason

Try www.acas.org.uk or the Acas helpline 08457 47 47 47
Surely as she is on a 3 month contract her employer has the right to terminate her employment at the end of the 3 months anyway regardless wether she is pregnantor not - the dificulty is in wether she should tell her employer before she gets offered a new contract if that happens.
Would like to hear the outcome of this - please let us know.
From Buenchico's link: "You must tell your employer that youre pregnant at least 15 weeks before the beginning of the week when your babys due"

So she could keep her mouth shut, get the permanent contract, then tell them later, assumimg she isn't too far into the pregnancy.

Most people don't go public until after 12 weeks anyway, as this is the time that you are at a much less risk of miscarriage.
