Is there any way to avoid paying this tax in the event of my parents property being left to me.

See a clever accountant. The laws changed last year for the better, especially if one parent is already deceased. Too complicated for me to explain on here, but an accountant will usually give you a free one hour appointment!!

Dont forget there is no inheritance tax to pay on the first �300.000 (or thereabouts).
