it depends on the circumstances . Say if there was a risk of your grandchildren coming into care and you wished to foster them then yes you would need to know the reason.
Depends on the type of social worker. Is it from mental health or child protection services. If you have any concerns speak to their parents or social workers yourself

thank you for answer, they are from child protection agency. just found out they were being seen by social worker by accident. Was not sure if Social Worker would give me any details,as my son is separated from childrens mother.

Your son can contact SS to ascertain if their are concerns fir his childrens safety. Is he their legal guardian?
Child protection social workers are mainly involved due to concerns about the safety and welfare of children
Whilst they are a confidential service confidentiality does not apply where there are risks to children

thank you bandearg. will tell my son to get in touch withSS. he isn't legal guardian, grandsons mother is. I have been concerned about grandson for a while,due to people she invites into her house. I dont know the best course of action to take concerning him. thank you once more.

your son can also apply to the courts to be appointed as a guardian to the children.
if you hsave concerns about grandson talk to his mother about offering support eg taking grandson for a night or two.
Your son can apply for custody care and/or guardianship of his son. You can also speak to SS. Its important to do something if you have concerns. Whilst it is not always acceptable to contact SS it is for the best where concerns exist to ensure the child is well cared for
