i've counted nine 'food related' programmes on the five main channels today, i enjoy the occasional 'foodie' programme but that's ridiculous

They must get the ratings as like you say, they are becoming more frequent, across several channels.
I love Masterchef and Saturday kitchen personally.
Yes and there are at least two car restoration programmes on at the mo, I've lost count of the number of home makeover/restoration programmes, antique/auction programmes......etc.

I thin most agree there are too many (food channel aside) but I tend to like them so never know which should be culled.

Just be grateful that the snooker's finished, talk about long winded. We were in Spain, put on the TV and there it was, in German!
