An thoroughly enjoyable series with an excellent performance by Sheridan Smith. However last night's episode was spoilt by the seen at the secret gay club showing men kissing and groping each other. It wasn't necessary to be so graphic, especially as there were probably a lot of elderly people watching it as the subject is from their era. In fact it made my stomach turn, if I had been watching it with my elderly mother I would have been embarrassed. Of course now I will be accused of being homophobic but i don't really care. Anyone out there agree with me (if you dare).

I think it's a moot point to be honest- gay people have always existed and always will, they did the same things in ancient Rome with one another that they did in 1960's Liverpool and still do now all over the world. How or why is that shocking? Elderly people are no more fragile than younger people, in fact you will have as many elderly gay people as you will have young gay people, so why the problem or embarrassment? If people cannot accept a representation of events relevant to a story they are watching unfold, they might want to consider selling their TV, as I don't think the rest of us would be too happy with their sanitised productions.

I can't honestly say I watched it a it's not my kind of TV, although I like Sheridan Smith a lot as an actress, but it was on in the background as I worked on something else, so I caught bits of it including the part in question. I didn't find it gratuitous at all tbh, it was pretty tame if anything.

kvalidir very tame indeed but if you had given the programme your full attention you would have realised some of what was shown was not necessary and actually detracted for the plot. it was like a little vignette of its own and for me I thought 'what the hell was that all about? we know he's gay for heavens sake, I don't need to see a room full of males writhing around with their hands down each others trousers'

Some people have got very weird ideas about the older generation, after all Madam Cyn is 81; the Profumo affair happened over 50 years ago and Last Tango in Paris with the butter scene was released over 40 years ago.

It must be a generation thing, I remember, during the sixties, being embarrassed watching certain programmes with my parents. I was never quite certain whether I was embarrassed for myself or on behalf of my parents.

Okay since I didn't see it in context I'm prepared to accept it may have been unnecessary but so are lots of scenes on film and TV- and some of the best scenes at that. Scent of a Woman ( the film) was devised form a vignette scene in a book for example, totally possible for that scene never to have been written, but it was because someone felt it was necessary. the same is probably true here- it made sense to the writer and Director for their overall vision of their production.
Out of interest, how many of the people who found it ' embarrassing' or 'gratuitous' would not have minded so much had it been a man and a woman involved instead of two men?

It's when you get to that age, Vulcan, where you no longer have ask your parents 'what they doing?' when a sex scene comes on tv but you think they don't know that you know very well what they're doing

I thought it was necessary. Maybe it could have been a little bit tamer and not made to look like it could turn into an orgy but it got the point over quickly.

I think 'Cilla' is brilliant. I love watching the romance bloom between her and Bobby. I don't think the gay scene was necessary either.
