Shawshank Redemption - A great story....aww hold on someone's beaten me to this one! so ok then Elephant Man as second choice...it always brings a tear to my eye.

Withnail and I, two of the best performances in film ever. A true master piece of cinema. I also love the original Planet of the apes, a case where the film is better than the book. The ending is truly spectacular when you see it for the first time.

I couldn't pick between Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me or The Green Mile. They're all fantastic films and great books too. All part of Steven King's genious work!

Hmm...I'll have to pick Shawshank too! Sorry that I can't be original. Though can I also pick One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest as well. Films that make you angry at the wrong-doings always get me.

Think you're bad mikewith? I agree with lots of above, especially Shawshank and Cuckoos Nest, also adding Schindlers List. But ultimately, if it was a desert island situation with one choice (the island having a dvd player!) it culd only be the one and only Willy Wonka. I love the pathos, the humour, the songs and the darkness!

The Song of Bernadette - Early film, black and white, seriously thought provoking, well cast, and a seminal piece of early special effects that added to the film's wholeness.

It's funny how many people name The Shawshank Redemption, considering it did pretty badly when it was first released. It's also one of my favourites, along with Trainspotting and Pulp Fiction - I loved the way Tarantino messed about with the chronology.

It has to be.... wait for it....Shrek....touching, funny, got a moral to the story, can watch it wiv the kids (and granny!) and brilliant in surround....wot more could u want?

Andrei Tarkovskii's 'Mirror' and 'Solaris' would be top of the list, with a couple of other Russian films not far behind. But there are different films for different reasons. 'Elvira Madigan' is a film of unparallelled beauty, except, perhaps, by 'Picnic at Hanging Rock'. 'Bridget Jones Diary' is one of my favorite comedies, 'Casablanca' for a love story - in fact most Bogart films - 'The Crow', 'Blade Runner' - How can you choose just one?

For 'wow' factor - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest... I have never before or since felt such an atmosphere in a cinema.
For prophesy - A Clockwork Orange....scary

varies with my mood... white Christmas, Holiday Inn, The man in the santa claus suit, sleepless in seattle, scent of a woman, now voyager, and of course an affair to remember, but also the rush hour movies and MIBs, bit of everything really except gross out and horror

I haven't seen (or heard of) many of the films listed above, but from what I have seen, my vote goes to The Fellowship Of The Ring. It was so perfectly done and it's the only film that's ever persuaded me to fork out and watch it twice at the cinema. Shrek is also brilliant. Seriously, my sister went out and bought a waffle maker after watching that.
