Brilliant film. Dead weird. How historically inaccurate is it? Are the costumes, shagging, sets, rituals and politics sort of like they would have been back in the day. Or was it just a classy soft porn film (I've seen an edited version)

He was into banging his sister and giving his horse a senior role in Roman politics, not to mention the mass murder, the list goes on. Almost makes you feel thankful for our leaders. But not too much.
Well Gore Vidal wrote the book and I think had a hand in the screenplay and the director Tinto Brass set out to make a real film, but producer, Bob Guccione (of Penthouse fame), shot his own bits. Bit you can guess which ones. Gore Vidal had his name removed from the credits and tried valiantly to distance himself from the project.
