The Jury deliberations were only partly successful, from a dramatic point of view. There were times when it was damn near impossible to hear what was going on, with everybody all talking at the same time. The hour allocated to the program hardly gave the event justice either....it was all a bit rushed.
The characters were all very one-dimensional. It was disappointing that the last bit of the Jury deliberations was not dramatised.
This was definitely not " Twelve Angry Men" by any means !
It would appear that Eileen Atkins's stance was accepted by everyone else in the end.........that is, if there the perception of any doubt, then Helen would have to be found not guilty. I am not convinced however, that all the Jurors thought that she was innocent. But "beyond any reasonable doubt" won the day.
Its perfectly possible that Rob should meet with Helen after the trial, as anyone who has been involved in a court case will tell....Court buildings, outside the actual Court Room are very much public spaces.
But this is not the end of the affair by any means. The long-term issue of custody of Henwee is still up in the air. The Court in that issue will still have to decide if he is safe with Rob, or Helen. After all, there is no doubt, nor has there ever been, that Helen did stab Rob.
I can't see that custody of Jack will be an issue at all. But Rob has buried himself in to Ambridge and the family like a cattle tick, and he won't go quietly by any means !
We will still have an interesting few months ahead.

We almost ran back from Church! I burnt the steaks, who cares! WELL DONE MISS CLIMPSON! I shouted that out loud! (for anyone who is not familiar with Dorothy L. Sayers, read 'Strong Poison' - just one determined woman saved a miscarriage of justice). Just now discovered it was Eileen Atkins.
On a more serious note - I really hope that real-life juries operate on a more cerebral level than was portrayed here.

I should hate to have my fate lie in the hands of that bickering jury. The ABers who have done jury service, was that a realistic representation? The Havers character elected himself foreman, maybe because his Dad was the AG years ago, but I was glad the Atkins character was there, she seemed to swing it. Will Justin withdraw his job offer and will he, Rob, get kicked out of Blossom Hill by whatshername? This will run and run, custody exchanges will be interesting.
Called it. Although yes, the episode seemed to imply the jury swinging the other way at least on one of the verdicts.
Far too few tears at the end. I don't think anyone in Helen's family would have been able to put a coherent sentence together for an hour after the verdict.
I guess zebo that those AB members who have been jurors are probably still bound by law not to discuss openly the internal deliberations in a jury room. But for what little it's worth, I think this was exaggeratedly based on what we fear jurors are like, rather than the reality.

I heard the Editor being interviewed this morning on the Today Program, and he said that the verdict was a 9-1 majority. I will listen again to the episode later but I am unsure exactly who the 1 person who voted to convict was.
Its was pretty clear that the Katherine Tate character changed mind towards the end, but I am unsure about Havers.

I have only been on a Jury once before and that was a Coroners Court, and I was the Chairman. It was different from this type of case, as the Coroner gave us very little room for manoeuvre.
It was an Inquest into an industrial accident, and we all wanted to say that the Company ( British Steel ) was wholly to blame but the Coroner wouldn't allow it.
It was a number of years ago, but I don't recall anybody on the Jury being anything other than serious about the proceedings. There were no "numpties"
But something I do recall, only too well, was the truly awful photos that were taken immediately after the accident, showing the decapitation of the poor chap..bloody awful.

It was Havers who was the One who voted to convict her.
Did everybody cook a Tuna Bake last night in solidarity with Helen?

in terms of reality and domestic abuse, what was disgraceful last night was the scene after the verdict where Rob confronts Helen - okay she stood her ground but the first thing that her lawyer would have done is slapped an order on him limiting his right to approach her - and, in fact, probably within several hundred yards.....
LB....In many respects, this week is going to be more interesting than last week.
As I have before, Rob is now part of the Ambridge DNA and he isn't going to go away any time soon. By the way, every now and then the scriptwriters get it wrong and the offer of a job by Justin was plain daft and completely unbelievable.
The Editor said this morning, than the issue of Rob-Helen-Henwee-Jack will reverberate for years to come. I remember something similar was said when Nigel fell off the roof....that it would effect a generation of Ambridge characters, and its so far proved to be correct.
I am 64 next birthday, and I suspect that people will be listening to, and discussing this long after I am gone !
