This is a program I do not normally watch but I was advised to do so tonight by my niece, who is a midwife.

I resume that the birth deformities that are being shown is due to Thalidomide. The close up of the little baby Susan was very detailed...does anyone know how this was achieved ?

Trick photography I am guessing ?

yup, very good super imposition of a real baby’s head onto the animatronic body
Has a new series started, mikey ?.
CGI possibly (didn't see it so only guessing)
A 'Thalidomide prosthetic baby' was made, according to the report in the Mail tv magazine. It was so realistic, I was in tears. Very moving episode.

Yes, I am guessing CGI as well. Extraordinarily realistic !
amazing and wonderful how the attitude to babies (and adults) with disabilities has changed...and it all started with the amazing courage of their parents.
I cried too, beautifully acted and scripted episode.
Yes it was set up at the end of the last series, the lady with bad morning sickness was prescribed the new wonder drug to combat it.
Beautiful episode. But then, they all are.
I am not one to harp back to the days when there was no swearing and nudity on the television. But it does show that it isn't necessary!
I only half watched it but wasn't there a reference to 'getting your leg over' by the main character though when talking to the keep fit girls?
Leg overs as exercises yes, I smiled too.
Sorry, that was in response to Gavmacp's point ans wasn't meant to detract from the sentiments of the thread regarding the portrayal of the thalidomide issue
It's strange how things change - a friend has Myeloma (blood cancer) and she is being treated with thalidomide. Who would have thought it would come in useful eventually.
It's also used to treat leprosy.

I seem to recall seeing a program on the Beeb, that showed that birth defects were beginning to come back in South America ( I think ! ) because Thalidomide was being used for something there. There were not enough checks being undertaken to make sure it wasn't being taken by women of child-bearing age. Seems daft to me.
It was brilliantly done, I so hoped it wasn't for real. I cried when Susan smiled at the doctor (i think it was. )
