shoot a guy then drop the gun

Hi all ive been watching the sopranos and the godfather prt 1 and when the theres an arranged hit on a guy, they whack them drop the gun and leave it at the crime scene
why?

I haven't watched The Sopranos,but I have a theory.It could be to make sure a gun is only used for one hit.Forensics would not nbe able to establish a connection between the hits.That does depend on the gun being clean in the first place and the shooter either wearing gloves or wiping it clean.

Should the shooter be aprehended at the scene, and he is not carrying the gun, it is difficult, if not impossible to conect him to the gun in a way that will stand up to legal defence in court.
