i need to replace the instrument panel on my 406 diesel does it matter what panel you put in or does it have to the same one i.e diesel or petrol clock or rev counter

I would say it has to be the same one.  The diesel one will have the glowplug light in the panel.  This maybe on petrol ones but the circuit board at the back might be missing.

The Rev counter and Speedometer will probably be different too.  Rev counter receives different signals on a diesel compared to a petrol.  Speedo, well, it might take into consideration the gearbox gear ratios.  Diesels usually have different gearboxes (actual gears) compared to petrol boxes.
