Just done my mothers annual car tax and it was £260 - Noted in the file that two years ago this was £120 - now that is serious inflation.

Looks like more tax raising through the back door - given 17 mln vehicles on the road, thats an incremental £2 billion for the Exchequer.....

£2 billion doesn't buy much motorway. Fuel tax swamps much more money into HM coffers than what is being spend on roads; funds needed to pay for things as diverse as e.g. the fight against cardiovascular disease, the obesity epidemic, despots in oil-exporting countries and and free bus passes.
