Minimum brake disk width

Just been to a place to get my front tyre replaced and they've pointed out to me that my front brake disk is only 16mm wide when they say minumum should be 18mm wide.

I've not heard of this before and it my well be the case, but maybe someone here may know a bit about brake disks.

The car is a 1998 Citroen Xsara, 1.9 Diesel.

Yes, TWR it was Kwik fit, but I've heard so many stories.
I've not got the Picasso model, just the slimmer Xsara, but it's good to know that most places do state minimum thickness, thanks Buenchico.

Hi, the garage you stated! if people go there to get a bulb changed they will be advised to have a full service Cockney, in your area there will be a small family run Garage, go there for their advise I think you will be surprised 7 they will tell you they same thing regards K.F. they are & always will be Tyre Fitters. you cannot blame the lads that work there, they are pressured to get more work at the motorist unnecessary expense.

I remember being told my discs had worn too thin once - apparently it is to do with them overheating more quickly if there is insufficient metal.

However I would never trust anything Kwik Fit say. They are sharks.

That is not an absolutely critical thickness. However, when they are excessively worn you may see uneven wear on outer edges, or uneven wear across the disc face .. or small surface cracking (extreme use) 1-1.5mm wear on each face is about the maximum.
Replace the discs when the pads are next fully worn out.

This should have been noticed on the MOT and if not a fail it should have been advisory. All tyre places will find some extra work even if the item is brand new. I always tell them to just fit the tyre or I'll go somewhere else.

MOT has nothing to do with it.
It could have done 50000 miles since last MOT.
Besides .. MOT regulations have been relaxed with regard to discs now.
They are allowed to be corroded, worn and pitted badly. So long as they pass on the brake roller test and are not broken of obviously cracked .. they will pass.

The minimum thickness for the MOT is 1.5mm left at any part of the pad
f. security and excessive wear of brake linings/pads f. a brake lining or pad insecure or less than 1.5mm thick at any point

The thickness given by the OP and the link above seems to refer to new pads there is a specific gap between the disc and the piston which the new pad fits into.Not sure what the Kwik Fit fitter meant ,was he suggesting they be replaced? - if Pads were replaced at 16mm left then parts companies could retire on the proceeds
