is it legal to have a black license plate with silver writing???

If the car is pre 1973 then it is legal:

But it sounds awfully tasteless. And it depends on where you are surely - "license plate" seems to be an American term as well as spelling.

I had the old type reg plate on my rebuilt 1977 Land Rover (because it looked the part), unfortunatley a policeman friend told me to change it to the modern one, they will just book you for having the wrong plate. Hope this answers the question, old plates look nicer.
