SEAT LEON PROBLEM...GEARBOX/CLUTCH
hi all my friend has a 2005 seat leon 1.4 petrol,he wanted to put a little gearbox oil into his gearbox but before consulting me he went ahead and poured some in....and hes put it in the flywheel inspection hole...now the clutch is slipping etc..but before this the clutch was quite high and there was a grinding sort of noise coming from somewhere when ever you pull off in 1st and into second gear before it went...not sure if the gearbox is at fault or how to fix the whole thing any ideas??????????????

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.well i borrowed the car last week...the grinding noise was like a sort of vibration which went away as speed built up etc...but i never noticed if there was any sound difference when engaging/disengaging etc...problem is i dont want do go to all the work of fitting a new clutch if the box itself was at fault etc...as it will have to come all off again lol...so stuck with what to do .....grrr
Your problem Anthony is the oil, that will have sprayed around the Bell housing, Flywheel, all over, Myself, the box would come out then the whole area cleaned, then replace the whole lot whilst the box is out, you may get away with the old flywheel, but that is false economy, meaning, if you had trouble from the starter ring ( That's attached the the flywheel) you have the lot to take out again, I'm sure the noise you have heard is the Thrust bearing & that is attached to the Fork within the housing, get quotes but not from the likes of K.F. get a family run garage but get the quotes for the WHOLE JOB first. the job can be done under 6 hrs.
my friend only tried to put oil in the gearbox as he said the gears felt a bit rugged so to speak so decided to lubricate the box only to tip it in the wrong hole...i know what u mean about the oil being sprayed alll over the place so it will all have to be cleaned whats the best thing to clean the flywheel with etc...and are you saying its a job best left to a garage etc?
Are you familiar with the work involved? if not leave it to someone that knows, if you can do it yourself, you will save on labour £100>>£200, Excluding the Clutch kit, Clutch/Pressure Plate/ Thrust Bearing. there are various sites to purchase these eBay but do not go for CHEAP, otherwise you will pay the price! ( Box OUT AGAIN) Clean off with degreaser/ Petrol but make sure on refitting you put a smear of grease on the Spigot shaft ( The spline where the clutch sits) also on the fork, do not put too much otherwise it will fly onto the clutch plate then you are back to square one. check the linkage of the gears, but I still think it's your bearing. check the Web for your parts but again, do not BYE CHEAP.
