Yes, jno, I'm pretty sure it was. As for learning on a luxury car, my father owned a garage, and always had a choice of those for himself, but when it came to me he found a Reliant, then an old Triumph Herald. He wasn't trusting a 17 year-old with anything at all powerful or expensive to repair ! It was a few years before I was allowed anything as big as two litres, at which point he got me a Bond 2 litre. Now that was lethal, but not because of the power. It had suspension which belonged on a Herald ! I eventually graduated to Triumph Stags, which together took the prize for worst cars I've ever driven (or not driven; they had endless faults)
