I am wanting a spare wheel for my Mokka which has 18’’ tyres on at the moment. It did not come with a spare. I am assuming a space saver would be the best option to put in the wheel well as a normal 18’’ tyre does not fit in the wheel well and I do not want it to take up room in my boot. I am assuming I need to get a 16’’ space saver wheel?

My other question is, would an 16’’ steel rim and tyre fit in the wheel well, as I would prefer this to a space saver if it would fit?

Thanks in advance

Going off my 308 Peugeot Lou, I purchased a proper wheel off eBay had the seller to send an Image of the Thread / Wheel, & a warrantee this this Image was correct, the price £50 with postage, I then took that stupid Get you home piece of rubbish that came with the car, removed the Tray that covered it & the new wheel fitted into the well without problems, if that's the way you are going to go look on eBay, 247 car spares, & there may be a Vauxhall Mokka site.
If you have 18 inch tyres you need an 18 inch spare not a 16 inch one.
Driving with one wheel 2 inches smaller than the others will effect the cars balance and handling,it may even be illegal!
It fascinates me that if you take your car in for MoT with a spacesaver fitted it will fail. This, to me, implies that they are not safe. Limiting the speed to 50mph is fine but it's down to the driver - it would be better if the speed were regulated by the engine electronins when a spacesaver was fitted.
The 16 inch spare will have a deeper profile tyre and the overall diameter of the wheel and tyre will be very close to the 18inch road wheel.
bhg481, Spacesaver spares are designed as an emergency measure. You should ONLY use one to drive to the nearest repair centre, at under 30 mph. If you are on a motorway you are advised not to even try to put it on but just call a breakdown service.
A spare ( spacesaver or not ) is much better than that puncture repair foam.
Tyre will probably be scrap after using the foam !.

Spacesavers are OK upto 50mph, it says on the wheel. The point I am making is that it is left to the driver to keep within this limit and not all will bother.
As tony says, foam will probably wreck the tyre or, at least, most grages won't even attempt a repair.
Tony tyre repair foam is another emergency only device. As with a spacesaver only to be used to get to the nearest service area. The tyre will be scrapped after foam has been used.
We have foam in my Zafira, but as it is a motability car we are told never to use it but to call out a mobile tyre repair service which is free on motability cars.
bhg as well as the speed limit there is a mileage limit/ time limit on using spacesaver spares.
I know someone who was stopped by the police with one on the car and told they would be 'flagged up' on the police data base to be stopped and checked a few days later to make sure they were not still using it!
I can understand the motability car people telling you that, EDDIE.
for gawds sakes why don't they return to putting a proper spare in new cars.
No mention of time/mileage limit on the one supplied with my car Eddie. In fact in France it was 40 miles to the nearest garage and it took them 2 days to get a tyre which fit my car (sidewall punture wrecked the tyre). This meant around 150 miles on the spacesaver with no problems.
tony they don't put a proper spare on for 2 reasons, one it saves weight which helps with the fuel economy, two cost ,it is cheaper, a full spare is now an 'upgrade at extra cost' . I have seen prices of £300 and over for some full spares.
bhg481 Yes I agree there is no mileage limit printed on a spacesaver spare.
But my mate really was stopped and told that he would be checked again to make sure he was not still using the spacesaver. The copper told him you are only allowed to use one to drive home or to the nearest repair centre, garage or workshop. Of course the nearest garage could be 50 miles away or more. A spacesaver spare sticks out like a sore thumb, the wheel is normally painted bright yellow! so you can see why they pulled him over.

Thanks all, Eddie i have been advised 16'' spare is fine as long as it is only used to get you to a garage as the deeper profile tyre on the 16 will make it nearly 18'' - does that make sense?
i have ordered a full size 16'' steel rim tyre and rim and hoping it is going to fit in the hole in the boot.

vauxhall quoted me £266 + for a spacesaver spare which would be a 16'' to fit in the wheel well, but my opinion is a full size one is going to be better than a spacesaver, and then it can be used again and for longer distances if needed. am i right?
Lou
See my post @ 20:13. If this is the official spare offered by Vauxhall it should fit your wheel well in the boot. You should not drive at more than 50 mph with this wheel fitted but it can be used to complete your journey and then get the damaged tyre repaired or replaced. I assume for that price you will also get a kit to allow a wheel change (jack, brace etc.)
I'm sure I have asked this before but here goes, if you are thinking of buying a Brand New or a high priced 2nd hand car, would you buy it with one of these stupid "Get you to a garage wheel" to put it correctly for a few, a "Space Saver"
I think the orange spacesaver tyre has fallen out of favour to be replaced by the sort of spare discussed above which are much more sensible in that they are a proper wheel that can be used for the life of the car, for as long as needed for each event. They cost about £70 to £100 if offered as an option on a new car.
Mr Blear, they would have no choice with me, if I paid a lot of money for a high priced car & there was one of these in the boot, they either replace with a proper wheel or I would walk away.
It's your choice, TWR, but the full size wheel won't fit the well cos it is deeper than the spare which has a narrower tread.
