I missed reading about the new car tax proposals in the budget. Will my 1100 cc Corsa still be charged at the same rate, or has it now changed? Thanks.

For a 1000cc Corsa the CO2 emission is 127g/km and for a 1200cc Corsa it is 139g/km which place both in Band C (121-150g/km) which had a duty of 105. This band has now been reduced to 100. I can't find the CO2 emission for 1100cc but it will probably be in the same band anyway.

Sorry to hijack your question Wendy but the Government proposals are a load of nonsense. How much carbon dioxide your car produces per km is irrelevant unless you take into account the annual mileage. A Ford Fiesta 1.1 will produce much more pollution if driven 30000 miles per year than a Chelsea Tractor which is only used for shopping and the school run. Also, some diesels seem to do well out of this despite the fact that they belch out particulates (black smoke) which a real health hazard.

Some diesels do indeed "belch out" black smoke, but only if they're poorly maintained and have dirty injectors. Mine is kept in good order and apart from a litttle white emission on a cold start doesn't produce smoke of any colour. And where did that 12mpg (or thereabouts) figure that was bandied about in Parliament fairly recently come from? I have to run a reasonably sized 4X4 because my work requires me to tow a substantial trailer and carry reasonable weights in the car, often on rough ground; in normal use (ie when being used just as a private car) it happily gives me 34mpg, and even when towing with a full load I get over 20. Maybe all the 4X4s in Westminster are 5-litre Range Rovers......

Sorry to be wandering a bit off-topic, but I feel 4X4s get a bit of a bad press. They're not all driven by suburban mothers on the school run - some of them have to work for a living.
