they dont need them as the wind whips around and does the job
Some do! I had a Ford orion/escort saloon some years ago, that had a rear wiper. I wish the wind would clear the backlight, it doesn't on my saloon!

That's the point though, it doesn't. I've got a Bora, following an Astra and sad as it sounds I really miss the rear wiper (not emotionally obviously!!). You have to get to motorway speeds before the wind is useful. Mondeos etc which are the 'same' shape have them, but only because they're a hatchback...
Main reason is that they are not easy to fit, the motor for the wiper would have to be in the roof which would mean a bulge in the roof lining.

As other answers have said the wind does not clear the rear window on saloons. On estates and hatchbacks as the rear windows are more upright wipers are fitted to clean the rear windows as the more upright rear windows suck up road dirt so obscuring the rear view.
My 1992 Ford Orion had a rear wiper, my friend's 1991 Honda Prelude had a rear wiper and I've seen some Peugeot 406s with rear wipers, so you can't say they don't ever fit them. When they do they are fitted at the bottom of the screen so the wiper motor is below the parcel shelf.
They're not usually fitted to saloon/sedan cars because there is no real need for them, for the reasons stated in previous answers.
subaru impreza and 1986- onwards mazda 323 also have rear wiper , but generally very rare
I had a mondeo many years ago - it definately had a rear wiper - it was annoying.
