what does the first letter of a number plate mean and where can I find out more

Since 2001 the format XXNN AAA has been used Where XX is the area where the car was registered

from 1984 to 2001 they where of the form X NNN AAA where X reprsented the motor year (starting on 1st august)

before 1984 they where of the form AAA NNN X where first 2 A's of AAA represented the are they where registered.

Before that they started A 1 and went up to ZZZ 9999 (in theory) I don't think the letters had significance.

This is al from memory so tread lightly pedants!
