escort battery light

i have a ford escort 1998 and my battery light keeps flashing on and off while driving or sometimes just stays on for 5 mins then goes off and i can hear a clicking sound as it flashes on and off????

sounds like your battery isn't being charged, this can be down to either a loose belt on the alternator, alternator itself not working or a faulty charging circuit. Check the belt first to make sure it isn't slipping.
yes,as pug says,it sounds like your alternator is on the way out.
I am a motor mechanic and I suggest you use a multimeter set on DC volts -
connect it across your Battery and start your engine - Voltage should read 13.4 to 13.8 volts - then turn everything electrical on and press the excellerator pedal a couple of times and the voltage should increase and stabilise to compensate for current being used - then read the same - 13.4 to 13.8 - if it doesn't then suspect the alternator
I had one vehicle where the light was showing dim all the time - it could not be seen in day time but was visible at night. - The battery wasn't charging and the fault turned out to be a loose main lead on the starter motor solenoid.

hello yes took it too a garage today and they told me as the its making a clicking sound as the battery light flashes sounds like a loose connection ie,alternator,starter motor etc??
