What's it all about, Alfie?
Is it just for the moment we live?
What's it all about when you sort it out, Alfie?
Are we meant to take more than we give
Or are we meant to be kind?
And if only fools are kind, Alfie,
Then I guess it's wise to be cruel.
This is all to do with Euro 5 emission engines. Basically there are 2 ways of doing it. SCR and EGR (and off the top of my head I can't remember what they stand for!). The EGR (I think...might have them the wrong way round) recycles the exhaust gases through filters which decreases the emissions. The SCR engine (see note for EGR) uses an additive called AdBlue to do this. It is a urea compound and is carried in a seperate tank. One of my mates has got a new DAF with an AdBlue tank and says it uses about 100lt every fortnight. Manufacturers are split between which way to go. DAF and Mercedes use AdBlue, whereas Scania and MAN go the recycling route. I think only Volvo offer the choice of engine. As to which will prove more popular, we will have to wait and see.
Just another thinly veiled tax for the road Haulage companies to pay.
Road transport pollution is a drop in the ocean compared to power stations and the amount of pollution from less developed countries, it won't make any difference at all.
