Extreme Cold Weather

My door locks have been playing up in this extreme weather but today the car has died completely, no life from the beepy key thingy lol (prob battery freeze) its minus 14 !! If I was to cover the bonnet with an old curtain or something the next few nights would this be a help or completely a waste of time?

Thanks Zacsmaster, Ive only had the car 3 weks (its second hand tho) so it could be an old battery but I have no idea and although Im in RAC, I dont have home assist, bloomin typical. Will have to wait for a thaw tho not sure if that will be this side of 2010. More snow coming in tonight and its already a few feet deep.

Well that will save me going back outside again then with a curtain lol

You could also find that older cables can freeze up and cause a lack of power coming through to electrical components , an old blanket / curtain could reduce the problem a little however it is not the real solusion. " after checking the battery " check the cables and connections , bad connections due to wear and tare age and such will show up more problems in " extreme " weather conditions. older cables become less conductive to .
just other posibilities you should consider when looking at this problem.

Im a girlie and dont know how to do that lol
I will see what happens when all thaws out and call a garage I suppose who will charge a fortune but thanks for the advice, its an 04 plate so not really old, all computerised etc, I wouldve thought it could handle this temperature however.

See if you can’t find some nice person who will give you a jump-start, it could be that your battery is OK, but has drained for some reason.

Once the car has started, keep a close eye on the temperature gauge – if the coolant in the radiator freezes, the engine will over heat.

If you can get somebody to tow you a mile from home and then call the RAC to tell them your car won't start, they will then come out and fix the car for you. I realise that it is a bit dishonest but at least you aren't defrauding the taxpayer out of thousands of pounds and getting away with it the way the M.P's are. Hope you get it fixed and a happy new year (also in Scottyland)
