Had my car insurance renewal notice.....
a few days ago from my Ins broker (been with them for 8 years) and they have put it up by £60 to £290. I called them and they said they couldn't find anywhere cheaper.
Not made any claims etc this year, so went on Go-Compare and have saved myself, £110.00 :-)

Last year I paid £151 fully comp. with Swinton insurance. About a month ago they phoned and said they had a really competitive rewal price.... £305.
I immediately banged the phone on the desk a few times, and then told him that ... ''there was a problem with the line, and for a moment I thought you'd said £305.''
He assured me that this was a very good quote ... I then said that I was expecting his call, and that I had already been on Moneysupermarket.com to get an alternative quotes.
He then aked how much did I expect to pay .... ''Not a penny more than last year'' I said.
His best price then went from £305 to £251... with £100 cash back in 90 days.
..... that's £154 saving.
If you dont ask ... they wont offer... In the past 3 months I've saved about £450 from my car, house and breakdown insurance.
They are all having difficulty keeping their customers, so take advantage of the internet and get your alternative quotes, and tell your insurer what you are willing to pay.
Last week I told the AA that their £165 renewal price was far to much, and that the RAC will do it for a new customer at £71 ... they matched it.... another £94 saved..!

To stay with one broker or ins company is not a good idea, you could have been paying less for the last 7 years, whenever you get your renewal, go on

Take the cheapest quote and ask your insurer if they can match it, they usually do!

This is why the insurance goes up!
I used to restore cars as a hobby years ago and I'm in the process of fitting all new panels to my 1984 VW Golf. I'm 48 now and I've reached the point where I don't want to spray anymore and the new paints make it harder anyway. I've just spent today plodding round my local body shops trying to find someone prepared to spray top coats once I've done all the preparation.
Could I find anyone interested? I never had trouble years ago but it was a different story today! Most of the body shops told me they no longer do private jobs and concentrate on insurance work as they earn thousands of pounds per car as opposed to hundreds from private customers like me! I was thinking all day that's why insurance premiums keep going through the roof!
I eventually found a great fella this afternoon who works by himself and he'll do the job for a very reasonable price. It was a great relief as I really thought no one was interested in work for private customers. That's why insurance premiums keep jumping up year on year!

I wouldn't go with a broker again, we go direct to the insurance company websites for quotes ourselves - and don't just use Go Compare etc because not all the insurers sign up to those sites We change our insurers every year - but do bear in mind that the rates have gone up for everyone, to cover the levels of claims that they are facing, and repairs costs going up, etc. Good on you trt, for the saving so much money this year!
There's another point I've mentioned before on this subject while I'm in full flow.
I've noticed that the really expensive insurers are those who advertise on the TV and other forms of media. I think it's obvious the customer has to pay for the costs of their multi-million pound advertising campaigns. The companies who don't advertise are significantly cheaper. I have used Ibuyeco.com for the last three or four years. My Fully Comp policy on my 1984 Golf started with them at £90.15. Last year it was £136 and I renewed in May for £146 (£2.81 per week). That includes extra legal cover. I've checked the policy very closely and I don't think Ibuyeco are any more untrustworthy than many of the better known firms. They all try to wriggle out of paying at the end of the day.
Believe me, I've had my car for 24 years now and I value it as well as the health and safety of my wife, other road users and myself. I wouldn't take any chances with insurance for the sake of saving a few pounds. They might be worth checking out.

I opted out too as a new windscreen for my car was about £85 a while back.
What I was also told today in the body shops is that repairers can now charge insurers a lot of money since manufacturers started welding panels to shells rather than bolting them. All the panels on my Golf just bolt off and on but the repairers charge hundreds - and sometimes thousands - of pounds to change even a single panel today!
