Music That Hurts
I’ve what I think is described as an ear worm - a tune running constantly through my mind. It’s the theme from
the 1971 film of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre starring Susannah York and George C Scott. Magnificent stuff made all the more magnificent by the beautiful and powerfully haunting orchestral piece from the genius of John Williams. Does anyone know what I mean when I say so emotional is this piece of music that it actually physically hurts me?
I asked my husband if music ever physically hurts him. He said he finds Ed Sheeran painful. Smartass! :o)

This... Brahms Piano trio no.1 Just the first few notes...my eyes hurt and my heart aches and I feel the emotion of it very intensely. Still the same over 40+ years hearing it.

I hope this works.
I found this piece of music very sad and moving since I heard it many moons ago. I pictured maybe two lovers that had to part for what ever reason and it breaking their hearts. Then in 2008 Il divo released this with lyrics. It makes me cry everytime and it hurts . As this was the year my husband of 40 years passed away. I often hear it in my head still.
Tigger/Tilly, I understand completely that music can carry with it sad and painful memories but the music I’m talking about is not a personal thing. It’s the music itself that has such a profound effect on the spirit. For example I watch a particular opera and the moment a specific aria begins, tears stream down my face and my heart hurts. And it’s not even sad!! I’ve felt awfully daft in opera houses across the world! It’s simply the intensity of the music that gets to me.
Elgars Nimrod does that to me as its just so powerful.
And also this. I think Lily Allen's version had a slight edge over Keane's original and I get very emotional when I hear it that i sometimes regret playing it.

And weirdly enough there is a song by Madonna called Oh Father which is haunting. When Like A Prayer first came out in the late 80s I had it playing over and over whilst reading a bio on Marilyn Monroe.
I've never heard the Jane Eyre music.
