I’ve what I think is described as an ear worm - a tune running constantly through my mind. It’s the theme from
the 1971 film of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre starring Susannah York and George C Scott. Magnificent stuff made all the more magnificent by the beautiful and powerfully haunting orchestral piece from the genius of John Williams. Does anyone know what I mean when I say so emotional is this piece of music that it actually physically hurts me?

I asked my husband if music ever physically hurts him. He said he finds Ed Sheeran painful. Smartass! :o)

This...Brahms Piano trio no.1 Just the first few notes...my eyes hurt and my heart aches and I feel the emotion of it very intensely. Still the same over 40+ years hearing it.

Vangelis is the master of the modern epic theme tune.
Everyone knows ’Chariots of Fire’, ‘Bladerunner’ ‘Conquest of Paradise’, but less well known is ’Alexander’. Give it a listen…

I couldn't post this yesterday - I was on my phone.

I hope this works.
I found this piece of music very sad and moving since I heard it many moons ago. I pictured maybe two lovers that had to part for what ever reason and it breaking their hearts. Then in 2008 Il divo released this with lyrics. It makes me cry everytime and it hurts . As this was the year my husband of 40 years passed away. I often hear it in my head still.
When the British rock-climber, Don Willens scaled one the most difficult ascents in South America (I forget which), he said he did it with, 'There's a Brown Girl in the Ring' constantly in his head driving him nuts.
That's certainly recognisable as John Williams...haunting is the correct description.

Thanks for BA Naomi.

My pleasure, pasta.
The Gladiator soundtrack. I think it's one of the greatest soundtracks ever made.

And the pocket watch tune in For A Few Dollars More.
Forgot Platoon, Adagio for Strings.

Do they actually cause you physical pain, tigger?
Just played your music MrsLadyBug. Very moving. x
Albinoni in ‘Gallipoli’.
Yes, Naomi, in the sense that they all bring me to tears when hearing them along with the images. The pocket watch one is the one I watched with my grandfather when I was a kid and reminds me of him. He died of cancer in the late 80s.
Handel's largo...played at my mum's funeral thirty years ago and very difficult to listen to even after all this time

Tigger/Tilly, I understand completely that music can carry with it sad and painful memories but the music I’m talking about is not a personal thing. It’s the music itself that has such a profound effect on the spirit. For example I watch a particular opera and the moment a specific aria begins, tears stream down my face and my heart hurts. And it’s not even sad!! I’ve felt awfully daft in opera houses across the world! It’s simply the intensity of the music that gets to me.
Elgars Nimrod does that to me as its just so powerful.

And also this. I think Lily Allen's version had a slight edge over Keane's original and I get very emotional when I hear it that i sometimes regret playing it.

And weirdly enough there is a song by Madonna called Oh Father which is haunting. When Like A Prayer first came out in the late 80s I had it playing over and over whilst reading a bio on Marilyn Monroe.

I've never heard the Jane Eyre music.

I posted it at 11.19 Thursday, tigger.
I know, Naomi. I listened to it and just said I'd never heard it before. This is my first time of hearing it.
Question Author
Oh sorry, tigger. I misunderstood.
