Musically speaking the songs of the 60s were very strong melodically and introduced interesting chords beyond the pop- 3 chord trick of 50s rock and roll. I teach music and singing, and whenever there is a good song out- regardless of era, my pupils always ask to sing it. I have noticed a real lack of good pop songs in the last 10 years. The only songs they ask to sing are the occasional ballads by Rihanna or somesuch. Or someone will cover a song from the 60s and they ask for that- without realising it is a cover! They learn most songs off adverts.
I also think it is a real shame that there are no prgrammes like TOTP anymore. Not only could I not tell you what is in the top 10 now, the kids I teach can't either. They all prefer to sing songs from musicals and Disney. High School Musical, Hairspray, Wicked... Pop is dying.
