What makes people who are born into a free society such as ours, go and take up arms against us?
Surely they should be tried for treason as British Nationals fighting against their own country.

btw, this was on the News this morning and not a rant of the DM

well at least we all agree on that
I am unable to say what's likely for two people I have never heard of before and know nothing whatever about, Venator? How do you manage it?

So. what's the evidence for your "almost certainly"?
Question Author
ok jno, if they are found guilty of this, what would you suggest happen?
the link says nothing but they are "suspected" of being Taliban and "claim" to be British nationals. Neither is in fact a crime, let alone treason.

If anyone has any evidence to the contrary, let's hear it.
guilty of what, Bobbi?
As I said earlier Jno no point trying to be objective here... it's a lynch mob thread. If you don't say ' string em up' 'Send em all back to where they came from' etc etc etc you don't fit in.
Usually, jno, I would take your stance.
However, as the information is, at present, minimal except to say that they are British Nationals fighting against British troops, I can see no other conclusion to draw.

As more details are released, I may well revise my opinion, but at the moment I cannot see that any other inference than that their actions are 'treasonous' can be made.
The maximum sentence for high treason is life imprisonment; was I the only one who thought it was still punishable by death?
But yes according to law they should be tried for treason but there are many laws which are no longer enforced as strictly as was originally intended so doubt they will be!

I am not in the 'know' to have such evidence but as Sqad has said, this is just a section to debate an issue, I can't be expected to look into the legal aspect as it was in the News today anyway
jno

<<A Foreign Office spokesman said: 'We can confirm that two British nationals have been detained in Afghanistan.>>
Question Author
NOX, a lynch mob, hardly
it was supposed to be a 'topic of conversation' only
"This is a website and not a trial transcript."

really ? i thought the charge of guilty had been asserted several times in this thread ?
Jno - you're right, of course, there's not enough evidence in this report for anyone to make hard and fast conclusions.

I'm taking this report as typical of a general situation.

I'm not a racist bigot, either - I have Muslim friends who are more upright, decent people than most.

Some of them are deeply ashamed of this minority.

perhaps I should put a "if found to be guilty" in my OP, would that suffice Ankou?
It wasn't a personal slight against you Bobbi- but it is the case that on answerbank if you attempt to be objective or discuss anything intelligently then all you get is knee jerk reactions and no-one fully reading your posts, with little thought put into WHY anything happens.
ankou.......the opinions of the ABers are opinions and have form no basis for legal pursuit or sentence.

Like chatting in the pub eh?
Question Author
and I accept what you're saying NOX :-)
maybe missing the words "if found guilty" didn't help
your q was:

"What makes people who are born into a free society such as ours, go and take up arms against us? Surely they should be tried for treason as British Nationals fighting against their own country."

i was agreeing with that (up there ^^^) - the remaining 'debate' i believe was around the specifics of these individuals, where there is no current proof either way.
Bobbi....DON't apologise......ankou knew what you meant.
Question Author
and each person has that right Ankou, I respect your input as I do all of the others
